CITB Training Courses and Accreditations

The Experts in Health & Safety Training

What is CITB?

CITB stands for the Construction Industry Training Board. It’s an organisation in the UK that specialises in providing training and qualifications to those in the construction industry. They provide construction workers with the skills, knowledge and competence to be able to operate safely on construction sites.

CITB offer a wide range of health and safety courses that support both employers and individuals in the construction sector. One of its key focuses is providing comprehensive training courses that cover various aspects of the construction industry including health & safety, technical skills, management and leadership.

Why should I take a CITB course?

Most construction sites require all workers to have a CSCS (Construction Skills Certificate Scheme) card. To acquire a CSCS card, an essential step is completing an CITB 1 Day Health and Safety Awareness course. This course is a mandatory step towards gaining an industry-recognised qualification and demonstrating competence in health and safety practices within the construction sector.

The CSCS card is widely recognised and respected by employers, contractors, and clients in the construction sector. It serves as a crucial requirement for gaining access to construction sites and helps employers verify the competence of their workforce. Holding a CSCS card not only opens up opportunities for employment but also improves safety standards and contributes to a more professional and skilled workforce in the construction industry.

Who should take a CITB course?

CITB courses are suitable for everyone in the construction industry, from apprentices to site managers, everyone needs the skills and knowledge that they provide.

Whether you’re an entry-level labourer, skilled tradesperson or experienced construction worker, CITB courses provide valuable information relevant to your role. If you intend to work on a construction site, you must have a CSCS card, and successfully completing a CITB training course is a crucial step to gaining one.

CITB courses are also suitable for site managers and supervisors. CITB courses offer specialised training courses for individuals looking to move into supervisory or managerial positions. These courses focus on leadership skills, project management, risk assessment, and legal responsibilities. If you aspire to advance your career into a leadership role within the construction industry, a CITB course can provide you with the necessary skills and qualifications to excel in these positions. When applying for a supervisory position, having a CITB qualification will put you above those who don’t.

If you’re an apprentice, a CITB course is a perfect way to build a base of foundational knowledge and skills that will impress your employer. We offer CITB courses that are perfect for beginners with little to no experience in construction or health, safety and environmental industries.

Which CITB course is best for me?

Site Supervision Safety Training Schme (SSSTS)

If you have or are looking towards gaining a supervisory role and responsibilities beyond site work, the Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) for 2 Consecutive Days will be most beneficial. It provides delegates with an understanding of health and safety law and guidance, and how it applies to a supervisor’s role. Together with supervisory responsibilities in controlling site safety, the need for risk assessments, method statement briefings, effective site inductions, toolbox talks and monitoring site activities effectively.

Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme Refresher

Certification for this course is valid for 5 years. To remain certified in this area, you will need to take a 1 Day SSTS refresher course before the expiry date on your certificate, otherwise, the full course will need to be retaken. The Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme Refresher course is most beneficial as it brings health and safety knowledge up to date, as well as giving a thorough overview of the legislative changes for workplaces.

Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS)

If you already have or wish to further your responsibilities beyond supervising, to planning, organising, monitoring, supervising, and overseeing groups of staff and workers, the 5 Day Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) course may be most favourable.

This 5 Day course is delivered as both a Day Release (1 Day a Week for 5 Weeks) and as a Block (5 Consecutive Days). The course covers all relevant and most up-to-date legislation to ensure safe working in the building, civil engineering, and construction industries. If delegates go over this date before taking a refresher course, they will need to take the full 5 Day course again.

CITB Environmental Awareness Training Scheme (SEATS)

The CITB Site Environmental Awareness Training Scheme (SEATS) 1 Day course is designed to provide basic environmental knowledge that many sub-contract chains and workers are required to demonstrate to major contractors and clients. This is most beneficial, as it will provide site workers, managers and contractors etc. with environmental, sustainability, legislation and best practice knowledge most up-to-date with the HSE. Along with the ability to identify, control, minimise and improve the environmental impacts of the work taking place / future work.

Our CITB training will enhance your understanding of industry-specific topics. By enrolling in a CITB course, you can gain valuable knowledge and develop essential skills that are directly applicable to your role within the construction sector.

The construction industry operates under strict regulations and standards to ensure the safety and quality of work. CITB courses are designed to align with these industry requirements, ensuring that participants are up-to-date with the latest health & safety practices and regulations. By completing a CITB course, you demonstrate your commitment to maintaining high standards and complying with industry guidelines.

Is CITB the same as CSCS?

No, CITB stands for the Construction Industry Training Board. They are an organisation that provides health and safety training and programs designed to improve the knowledge of individuals working in construction.

CSCS stands for Construction Skills Certificate Scheme. This is a scheme that verifies the skills and qualifications of people within the construction industry. The CSCS card serves as proof that an individual has met certain health and safety requirements and possesses the necessary skills to work safely on construction sites.

To gain a CSCS card, you must complete the relevant CITB course and pass a CITB touch screen test.

What topics are covered in a CITB course?

There are a wide range of different CITB courses available for different professions, industries, and roles for those with onsite responsibilities / looking to progress their career. A brief outline of each course’s content can be found above.

How long does a CITB qualification last?

The 1 Day Health and Safety Awareness (HSA) and the 1 Day Site Environmental Awareness Training Scheme (SEATS) courses must be retaken in full after the expiry date stated on the delegates certification. If the HSA course is not renewed the delegate’s CSCS card will lapse.
